An arcade is a small and open building, usually built of wood or cast iron, which permits to be outside and have a coffee, read a book or have a chat, and is still protected against sun and rain.
A particular diffusion took place in the 19th and early 20th century, similar to the kiosk, which became popular in the 18th century with the english landscape gardens. In opposite to the pergola, which is an extension to another building, the arcade is free-standing.
